On Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the small town of Jacó attracts visitors with its adventurous rainforest, relaxed social climate, and surf breaks, all just a 1.5-hour drive from the capital, San José. On dry land, travelers can take horseback riding tours through the jungle or adrenaline-pumping off-roading, soar through the air on ziplines or aerial trams, or get wet with waterfall rides, white-water rafting, crocodile cruises, and mangrove kayaking. In Manuel Antonio National Park, tours offer views of native wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and agoutis in their natural habitat, as well as 180 species of birds and white-sand beaches.

Arenal Volcano turns up the heat with its plumes of smoke and molten lava flows, and after the viewing, tours often stop for a soak in the nearby geothermal hot springs. Cool off with surf lessons at Jacó Beach, where the waves are rideable year-round. The long stretch of beach offers a variety of waves for different skill levels, from beginner to expert. Cruises from the Gulf of Nicoya take passengers to white-sand beaches and sparkling turquoise waters. Nearby Tortuga Island offers snorkeling and sunbathing, while other boats offer full-day trips to fish for marlin, mahi mahi, and even tuna.
